Increased Accuracy in Calculation of Effective R Value:

3D Modeling for ASHRAE

Wednesday, February 15, 2012
12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Salt Lake Community College (Miller Campus)
Miller Free Enterprice Building
Second Floor, Room 203
9750 South 300 West
Sandy, UT 84070
Free Parking North/East of the Building.

Synopsis:

When conductive material bypasses the insulation layer of a wall assembly, a heat transfer path (thermal bridge) is created which greatly reduces the thermal performance of the building.  Until now, thermal bridges were analyzed in 2D. However, real-world details involve three dimensional heat flow. Taking an innovative approach that used sophisticated 3D computer modeling, verified through laboratory measurements and calibration, Morrison Hershfield analyzed 40 typical mid-rise and high-rise details. The resulting U-factors include the effects of 3D connections, interior/exterior insulation assemblies, horizontal/vertical Z-girts, exposed slab edges, curtain wall insulated spandrels, etc.

In this presentation, Morrison Hershfield will present our findings and explain how to use this new information to obtain increased accuracy and simplify the calculation of effective R values of wall assemblies.  This research unlocks a powerful new way to save energy in buildings.

Here’s a short 4 ½ minute video about the research:

About the Construction Specifications Institute

The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) is a national association established in 1948, dedicated to creating standards and formats to improve construction documents and project delivery. The organization is unique in the industry in that its members are a cross-section of specifiers, architects, engineers, owners, contractors, students, building materials suppliers and representatives, and other construction industry professionals. The organization has 146 chapters and more than 15,000 members worldwide.

The Salt Lake City Chapter was established in April 1963, and currently serves the State of Utah. CSI SLC provides professional development and networking opportunities for it’s members, and collaborates with other industry associations and universities to address local construction issues and offer certification and training seminars. CSI is a provider of AIA CEU's. CSI SLC also performs central guidance for local CSI Student Chapter affiliates.

Monthly Chapter meetings allow members the opportunity to communicate openly with their counterparts and exchange information for successful project management. CSI is renowned in the industry for its rigorous certification programs for professionals seeking to improve their knowledge of accurate and concise construction documents. CSI provides continuing education, professional conferences, and product shows. Continued here

The Construction Specifier
The Construction Specifier is the official magazine of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), a national technical organization, established in 1948, working to meet the industry's need for a common language and system to organize, standardize, retrieve, communicate, and exchange construction information. The Construction Specifier focused on the job functions of its core readership, professionals involved in the specification process. The publication offers insight and analysis on industry topics through news, product announcements, legal columns, case studies and other research as well as providing in-depth features on industry-related issues.
Current editions of Construction Specifier Magazine are available online. Starting with the January 2007 issue, Construction Specifier Magazine is available online at www.constructionspecifier.com.
